Chapter 4

Kalista rode to the stables on the back of Caldwell’s horse. Caldwell insisted on walking beside them. The stables were empty of people, save for a young stable hand.

“Where did Francine go?”

“My Lady,” the stable hand bowed so deeply Kalista blushed.

“Um, thank you.” She motioned for him to stand back up. “My servant, Francine, she was supposed to be waiting here for me. Have you seen her?”

Caldwell stood silent during their conversation, alternating his speculative stare between Kalista and the stable hand.

“My Lady, I think I saw Francine leaving as I arrived to tend to the horses.”

“Where to?”

The stable hand pressed his lips together and looked to the ground. Long seconds passed while the three of them stood in silence.

“She asked you a question,” Caldwell said with an edge Kalista didn’t appreciate. “Do I need to call for the marshal?”

Appreciated or not, Caldwell’s tone jolted the stable hand out of his silence. “To the peasant huts. There was, something, she wanted to look into.”

Realization dawned on Kalista at the same moment the young stable hand dropped his gaze and began to worry one of the holes at the front of his shirt. Kalista lifted a comforting hand to his shoulder and hated the way he flinched as if she were going to beat more information from him. “I know what’s going on. She already told me how some of the children have going missing.” He peeked up at her. “I need to know which direction she went.” The peasant huts surrounded almost the entire castle grounds. The stable hand said nothing and Kalista lifted a silencing hand to Caldwell. “I’m going to help. I just need to find her first.”

If the stable hand didn’t want to tell her anything, Kalista wouldn’t make him. She remembered what it had been like. As a servant, her real loyalties had always been to her family. And that family hadn’t been decided by only blood.

“If there was anyone willing to help us,” he mumbled. “It would be you.”

To Kalista’s further shock the young stable hand bowed, grasped her hand, and gently kissed it. He dropped her hand quickly as if realizing what he was doing. “Nearest to the east shore, past the tourney field.”

“Thank you.” She turned back, noticing the way Caldwell looked at her, somewhere between confused and upset. “Would you like to join me?” she asked him.

He rolled his eyes. “We need another horse.” Caldwell turned to address the stable hand but he had already disappeared inside and returned in moments with a mare for Kalista.

Kalista and Caldwell rode straight through the tiny town of tents. She couldn’t help but search for a green tent that held a monster, but by the time they reached the bustling tourney field, Kalista assumed Caldwell had taken them on a path that didn’t pass by his father.

The first of the tiny huts sprouted up on the other side of the tourney field. Most of the peasants were in the castle. Those who had remained in the village, eyed Kalista and Caldwell cautiously as they passed.
